The Biggest Misunderstanding About Digital Marketing in Business Today
During the last TKH Seminar, a fashion business owner shared something that sounded very familiar. She explained how she had tried almost every “digital marketing strategy” she could find online. She was posting consistently, boosting content, running ads when she could, and trying to stay active on multiple platforms so her business could “stay visible.”

But as she explained everything she had been doing, it became clear very quickly. She wasn’t actually doing digital marketing. She was doing social media management, and calling it digital marketing.

Digital Marketing
Digital marketing is one of those terms that sounds technical, but in reality, it is very simple. It is everything your business does online to make people discover you, trust you, and eventually buy from you.

It is not one activity, It is a system of different actions working together. The problem is that most people reduce it to just posting on social media, because that is the most visible part of it. But posting alone is like setting up a shop in a busy Lagos market and assuming customers will magically walk in because your products look nice.
Sometimes they do. Most times, they don’t. Now let’s break down what Digital marketing involves.

  • Content Marketing

One part of digital marketing is content marketing. This is how your brand speaks before people are ready to buy. It is the educational posts, the storytelling, the relatable content, the videos that make people pause for a second before scrolling past.

Without this, your page becomes just another place selling things. And people scroll past selling pages very quickly. Content marketing is what helps your business build familiarity and trust over time.

  • Social Media Marketing

Then there is social media marketing. This is where intention comes in. It is not just about posting content, It is about making sure the right people actually see that content and respond to it. This is where strategy starts to matter.

Understanding who your audience is, what they care about, what will make them stop scrolling, and what will make them take action.

This is also where ads, targeting, campaigns, and positioning come in.

It is the difference between shouting into a crowd and speaking directly to the person who actually needs what you are offering. Without this, even good content can go unnoticed.

  • Email Marketing

Another part is email marketing. This is where you stay connected with people who have already shown interest in your business but are not ready to buy immediately. It is not about chasing new attention, It is about nurturing existing attention.

Some people will see your brand today and forget about it tomorrow. Email marketing is what brings them back when the timing is right. It is simple, but very powerful when done properly.

  • SEO and Paid Advertising

There is also SEO, which helps people find your business when they are actively searching for what you offer. This is not about social media, this is about visibility on search engines like Google. It is like having your shop in a busy area, but also making sure your signboard clearly tells people exactly what you do.

Then there is paid advertising, which allows you to push your business in front of the right audience faster. Instead of waiting for organic discovery, you are intentionally placing your business where attention already exists.

How It All Works Together
The mistake many businesses make is treating digital marketing like one single action instead of a system. But in reality, all these parts are meant to work together. Content creates attention, Social media marketing distributes it, SEO supports discovery, Email marketing builds retention, Ads increase reach and speed.

When they are disconnected, it feels like effort without results. But when they are aligned, your business stops feeling like it is trying things online.
