Aesthetics or Functionality, What really makes a good design?
There is a particular confidence that comes with being called a “creative designer.” It sounds like you can take anything and turn it into something magical. Give you a blank page and you will return with something that looks like it belongs in a museum.
But what really makes a good design?

First of all Creativity
Creativity is extremely important in design because it is what makes people pause in the first place. On social media, attention is expensive. People are scrolling fast, thinking about ten things at once, and ignoring anything that feels familiar or boring.
So what makes them stop? Creativity. A bold color, an interesting layout, a visually different idea.

Something that feels fresh enough to interrupt the scroll. That first moment is called the hook. And without it, even the best message never gets seen.

Think about Lagos traffic again. If everyone is moving and suddenly something unusual happens on the roadside, everyone looks. Not because they planned to, but because something broke the pattern.

That is what creativity does in design. It breaks the pattern. But breaking attention is only step one.

The Hook Without Clarity Does Not Convert
This is where many designs fail. They are creative enough to get attention, but not clear enough to hold it. So people stop for a second… then move on. Because once someone pauses, their brain asks one question immediately: “What is this trying to say?” If the answer is not obvious, interest disappears.

You might have a beautiful design, but if people cannot understand your message within a few seconds, the creativity loses its value. It becomes decoration instead of communication, and decoration does not sell.

Why This Matters for Businesses
Many brands focus only on making things look “creative.” But design is not a competition of who can make the most artistic post.It is about communication.
Your audience is not trying to decode your design. They are trying to understand your offer quickly enough to decide whether it is relevant to them.

If creativity confuses clarity, you lose them after the hook. If clarity exists without creativity, they may never stop at all. That is why both matter.
